Yorkshire Words

I was born a southerner and came to Yorkshire in 1999. I spent a while not quite understanding all the words people were using, but now I often use them myself too. Some of my southern friends say I even sound northern now, but I guess most northerners can still tell I wasn't born here!

Put t'wood in t'oil!

"Shut that door!" In case you're still wondering, it's short for "put the wood in the hole".

Some of my favourites

Wednesday 19 March 2008

Pogged - that feeling you get when you've eaten slightly too much. Not enough to make you regret it though!

Love - often used by bus drivers, even to people of the same sex "Thanks love". Often used between complete strangers.

Mash - what you do to a pot of tea. No, nothing to do with potato mashers. I think it's the act of pouring water on the tea bags.

Aye - Yes.

Owt - something, anything, everything. So much quicker to say, and it can be used for several different words!

Nowt - the opposite of owt!
